Fat-free New York City · 2006-12-07 18:37

HamburgerNew York has become the first city in the US to ban artery-clogging artificial trans fats at restaurants.

Trans fats are used in in everything from french fries, biscuits, crackers to pizza, but their consumption is believed to be harmful for health and linked to heart disease.

“It’s basically a slow form of poison,” says David Katz, director of the Yale Prevention Research Centre. “I applaud New York City, and frankly I think there should be a nationwide ban.”

New Yorkers are all for the ban, saying health concerns were more important than fears of officials supervising their diet, reports Australian news.
