Bird flu suspected in St Petersburg Zoo · 2006-12-19 15:59

GeeseOne of the oldest zoos in Russia, St Petersburg zoo has closed down until the end of the year after the discovery of two dead geese, Reuters says.

An expert, who had knowledge of tests carried out on the dead geese, denied that the birds had died of the bird flu as “they had been vaccinated against bird flu.”

Bird flu remains essentially an animal disease but it has infected more than 250 people worldwide since late 2003, killing more than 150, according to the World Health Organisation. Experts fear the virus could mutate into a form that is easily transmissible between humans.
