The Russian troops quit Tbilisi · 2006-12-26 12:37

SoldierRussia has withdrawn its personnel from its military headquarters in the Georgian capital Tbilisi.

Russian troops came to Tbilisi in the 1990s to help maintain order in the former Soviet republic, which was plagued by civil unrest.

The pro-Western government of Mikhail Saakashvili wants to reduce Russia’s influence here and ultimately join Nato. It managed to strike a deal with Moscow to close Russia’s military bases in Georgia, the BBC informs.

The Russian troops have left Tbilisi for the military base in Gumri, Armenia and Russia.

According to Kommersant, Russian headquarter premises, located in the downtown of Tbilisi, have been officially handed in to Georgia. The premises are likely to change the owner. The Defense Ministry of Georgia will auction the premises for at least $20 million.
