Leonid Nevzlin accused of murdering Litvinenko · 2006-12-28 18:38
Russian prosecutors said Leonid Nevzlin, a former top manager of the YUKOS oil company, could be involved in poisoning of Alexander Litvinenko.
Alexander Litvinenko was poisoned with radioactive Polonium 210 and died in London on November 23.
Prosecutor-general’s office posted a statement on its Web site www.genproc.gov.ru: “A version is being looked at that those who ordered these crimes could be the same people who are on an international wanted list for serious and very serious crimes, one of whom is Leonid Nevzlin”.
Mr Nevzlin’s spokesman said: “These statements are ridiculous and do not warrant a response.” After Khodorkovsky’s arrest in October 2003, Nevzlin fled to Israel and later received Israeli citizenship.
Tim Osborne, the head of holding company GML, YUKOS’s main shareholder, told Reuters, that the accusations against Nevzlin were an attempt by Russian officials to divert attention.
“They are trying to blame Nevzlin but everyone else believes that either the Russian government or the FSB were behind the murder of Litvinenko,” he said.
Before his death Alexander Litvinenko made a statement accusing Russian President Vladimir Putin of his murder. The Kremlin called Litvinenko’s allegations “nonsense”.
According to Reuters, the prosecutors’ statement could indicate Russia plans to up the pressure on the former owners of YUKOS.
YUKOS ia a bankrupt, its assets are expected to be sold next year. The former head of YUKOS Mikhail Khodorkovsky is serving an 8-year sentence for fraud and tax evasion.
