After the Australian Open Maria Sharapova will top the WTA as second seed Amelie Mauresmo suffered a shock defeat to Lucie Safarova.
The Czech teenager Lucie Safarova was playing some really good tennis while the French was making errors, handing the victory to Safarova 6-4 6-3, Kommersant reports.
Maria Sharapova had an easy 6-3 6-1 win over Tathiana Garbin and goes on to face fellow Russian Vera Zvonareva.
Svetlana Kuznetsova, Elena Dementieva and Dinara Safina lost and are leaving the tournament. Anna Chakvetadze was the only Russian woman apart from Sharapova to move on to the next round.
