Russian WBA champion Nikolai Valuev defended his heavyweight title in Switzerland’s Basel after American challenger Jameel McCline retired with a knee injury in the third round, RIA Novosti informed.
According to Kommersant, on the last second of the third round, McCline fell over after throwing a right and was unable to get back on his feet. The American was taken to hospital with his left kneecap popped out after Valuev had been declared winner.
With his 46th career win, Valuev is getting close to match Rocky Marciano's stunning 49-0 undefeated career mark. Nikolai Valuev, nicknamed “the Beast from The East”, successfully completed his third defense since winning the WBA title against John Ruiz (U.S.) in December 2005.
He became not only the first Russian boxer to win the WBA title but also the tallest and heaviest world boxing champion in history of the sport. He weighs 146 kilograms and 2.1 meter tall.
