Amr Moussa: arab world trusts Russia · 2007-02-07 11:34
Arab League Secretary General, Amr Moussa, has met with Russian Foreign Minister, Sergey Lavrov, in Moscow. During the meeting Mr Lavrov called on Middle East countries to take a greater role in mediating the regional conflicts.
Russia's foreign minister spoke on behalf of the quartet of international mediators, which includes Russia, the U.S., the European Union and the United Nations.
In his turn, Amr Moussa urged to put an end to what he labelled the bloodshed and barbarism of the Iraqi conflict.
According to Russia Today, he sees Russia as an unbiased go-between in the region who is capable of influencing the situation.
"Russia enjoys confidence in the Middle East, the Arab world has confidence in Russian diplomacy," said Mr Moussa in an interview for Russia Today. "Besides, the last decades have seen closer relations between Russia and the Arab world. Russia can work both with Arab parties and with Israel. It is able to move things that have been stalled for so many years because of the bias of certain international policies towards Israel against the Arabs – which is not the case at all with the Russian diplomacy."
