There is no politics in the new criminal case against former Yukos CEO Mikhail Khodorkovsky and Menatep head Platon Lebedev, "it’s pure crime," spokeswoman for the Prosecutor General’s Office Marina Gridneva stated on Friday.
"As you know, Mikhail Khodorkovsky and Platon Lebedev have been charged with theft of shares belonging to the state, misappropriation of oil and legalization of money derived from sales of this stolen ??“ I emphasize ??“ stolen oil," Gridneva said.
"Under our Fundamental Law??¦ "land and other natural resources are used and protected… as the basis of life of the peoples living in a given territory'," she said.
"A person, or a group of persons cannot rapaciously seize oil or other natural resources," Gridneva said, adding that "the prosecutor’s office must protect the interests of the state and its citizens."
On Friday, the Russian Prosecutor General's Office explained the essence of new charges against the ex-chiefs of YUKOS and MENATEP, Mikhail Khodorkovsky and Platon Lebedev.
According to investigators, "Khodorkovsky and Lebedev together with other participants in an organized group by fraud and compilation of fictitious documents stole shares of daughter organizations of the Eastern Oil Company, inflicting major damage on the state," the Prosecutor General's Office said, ITAR-Tass reported.
