Vladimir Putin meets Jordanian monarch · 2007-02-13 17:51

Vladimir PutinRussian President Vladimir Putin met the Jordanian monarch King Abdullah II in Amman on Monday, Mosnews news agency reports.

Jordan is the latest stop on Putin's Middle East tour aimed at forging "oil diplomacy' and kick starting peace talks in the region.

His diplomatic trip comes when the US stature in the Gulf is shrinking and Arab monarchies are busy boosting ties outside the region. Both Qatar and Saudi Arabia have welcomed Putin, despite being traditional US allies.

The leader of Russia appears to have found a quick success on his historic visit with an oil agreements reached with Saudi Arabia and a deal to back a natural gas cartel in neighbouring Qatar.

The Jordanian government has said it hopes that Russia will help restart Israeli-Palestinian peacemaking.
