Lenkom theatre buildingFire broke out in a Moscow nightclub early on Sunday, killing 10 people, an Emergency Situations Ministry spokesman said.

A nightly “fire show” being performed by a waiter at the club using spirits went badly wrong, a 20-year-old barman at the club told rescue workers.

The preliminary accounts indicated that waiter inadvertently set his clothing on fire and that in turn ignited a nearby five-litre container of inflammable liquid.

He said all the deaths were due to suffocation. About 150 people were evacuated, including four who were hospitalisd.

The club is located in the historic Lenkom theatre building in central Moscow.
