Russia proposes UN fact-finding mission to Kosovo · 2007-03-28 14:11
Russia has proposed sending a UN fact-finding mission to Kosovo before the Security Council debates a UN plan that supports eventual independence for the mainly ethnic-Albanian province of Serbia.
Russian UN Ambassador Vitaly Churkin made the proposal on March 27 at the UN.
Along with Serbia, Russia has signaled its opposition to the plan put forward by the UN envoy for Kosovo, Marrti Ahtisaari, who has said independence for Kosovo is the "only viable option."
Churkin said he looked forward to discussing the UN plan with Ahtisaari, Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty reports.
“I don’t want to criticize Mr. Ahtisaari’s proposal behind the back of Mr. Ahtisaari, with whom Russia has had all sorts of very close relationships in the past, and we’ve been supporting his negotiating efforts in the past 18 months in this capacity,” Churkin said. “We do have some issues and I am looking forward to discussing them in the presence of Martti Ahtisaari when he comes here to Security Council.”
Earlier, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said it was too early to say how Russia—veto-wielding member of the Security Council—would vote on the UN plan for Kosovo.
