The National Hockey League has rejected a proposal by Russian Ice Hockey Federation president Vladislav Tretiak to replay the 1972 Summit Series, The Globe and Mail informed.
Tretiak had sent a letter to NHL commissioner Gary Bettman seeking approval of an eight-game exhibition series between the top Russian and Canadian players in August and September to commemorate the 35th anniversary of the seminal competition.
In a reply sent to Tretiak and copied to the heads of the International Ice Hockey Federation, Hockey Canada and the National Hockey League Players’ Association, NHL deputy commissioner William Daly said yesterday: “While we appreciate your interest in staging a revival of the Summit Series of 1972 . . . we do not believe a similar event in the fall of 2007 is either practical or possible.”
