Aeroflot joins the race for Alitalia · 2007-04-03 15:28
Russia’s Aeroflot has joined the race for troubled Italian carrier Alitalia, jurnalo web site informed.
The deadline for prospective bidders planning to take part in the company’s privatization expired Monday.
Aeroflot teamed up with UniCredit, and two previously separate bidders – US private equity firm Texas Pacific Group and MatlinPatterson – joined forces with Italian merchant bank Mediobanca to present offers.
“Aeroflot is really showing interest in this project. Talks on the issue have taken place. We’ve made an offer,” the Russian airline’s Deputy Chief Executive Lev Koshlyakov told Reuters.
Rival Italian airline AirOne, backed by Intesa-San Paolo bank, is the other bidder.
The shortlisted concerns must now submit a preliminary non-binding offers for Alitalia by April 16.
The Treasury is planning to complete the privatisation of Alitalia by selling at least 39. 9 per cent of its 49. 9 per cent stake in the loss-making carrier.
