Solomon islanders expect another tsunami in panic · 2007-04-03 12:19
At least 13 people were killed when a tsunami set off by an underwater earthquake hit the Solomon Islands yesterday.
It washed away entire villages and triggering tidal wave warnings across the Pacific Ocean, from Australia to Hawaii.
With many people missing, the death toll was expected to rise.
The massive earthquake, 8.0 in magnitude, struck at 7.40am local time, prompting a tsunami alert for the whole region.
On Ghizo, thousands of people took refuge on a hill behind the town, where they were without shelter or food and water. A series of aftershocks measuring up to 6.7 caused further panic.
Confusion and panic have seized the Solomon Islands with reports some islanders are expecting another tsunami, Nine MSN news web site informed.
“We’re waiting at the moment, there’s another wave coming at lunchtime ??” it’s building in the deep water, apparently,” Hans Mergozzi, a dive operator based on the tsunami-hit western island of Gizo, told Nine MSN.
Mr Mergozzi is managing director of Solomons Connect, who operate diving and fishing tours out of Gizo Hotel.
“I got away with minimal damage but there are some low-lying villages that are on pretty much sea level that simply got wiped out,” he said.
