The largest nuclear-powered icebreaker in the world has been put to sea and left St. Petersburg for Murmansk, Mosnews informed.

“The 50 Years of Victory” icebreaker was was built at the Baltiisky Zavod ship factory. Since 1989 it was under construction and this February it was successfully tested.

“The icebreaker was launched on the Baltic Sea and set sail for its port of assignment in Murmansk,” the spokesman said.

“The icebreaker will follow a Northern Sea route for the ice channeling of vessels during the 2007 spring navigation period.”

The icebreaker is a 159-meter long and 30-meter wide vessel, with a deadweight of 25,000 tons with 138-man crew. It breaks through ice up to 2.8 meters deep.
