The death toll from the tsunami may rise · 2007-04-06 16:38
More people are receiving relief supplies in the tsunami devastated area in the Pacific nation of Solomon Islands, Xinhua reported.
But it is thought that some areas, especially the hardest hit villages, are not receiving what they need quickly enough.
ABC radio reported Friday that aircraft are now flying in and out of the Gizo airport again, significantly opening up the flow of people and supplies between the national capital of Honiara and Gizo, the Solomon Islands’ second largest urban center.
Gizo and the surrounding area is the hardest hit area in the tsunami sparked by a magnitude 8.1 earthquake on Monday.
There is an urgent need for shelter, food, kerosene, water and clothes in the village.
There are fears that the death toll from the tsunami may rise substantially as authorities have confirmed more than 30 people have been killed. It is now thought there are up to 100 people still missing.
