Johnny Hart, known to newspaper readers for his “B.C.” and “The Wizard of Id” comic strips, has died of a stroke at his home at tha age of 76.
Hart populated his strips with wisecracking cave men and henpecked sorcerers to comment on contemporary life, Playfuls said.
He died Saturday at his drawing table after a stroke, his wife off 55 years, Bobby Hatcher Hart, said.
Johnny Hart had recently completed treatment for non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma.
His comic strips were among the most popular and successful of his era, with readership estimated at 100 million.
Starting with “B.C.” in 1958, and then continuing with “The Wizard of Id” in 1964 – a collaboration with Brant Parker – Johnny Hart’s work appeared in more than 1,300 newspapers.
Hart is survived by his wife, two daughters, a brother, a sister and two grandsons.
