Elizabeth Hurley’s father-in-law, Vinod Nayar, has volunteered to give a written statement against both Hurley and his son, businessman Arun Nayar.
Previously it was reported that he had disowned the couple because of arguments during the wedding.
According to Reuters, the couple could be charged with insulting Hinduism by breaking taboos with their wedding in the Indian city of Jodhpur last month.
Vishnu Khandewal, from Jodhpur, claims under 295a of the Indian Penal Code – which deals with “deliberate and malicious acts intended to outrage religious feelings” – it is against the law to marry in a Hindu ceremony if you are not a Hindu.
Khandewal said: “She has hurt the religious sentiments of the community by marrying in Hindu style, which is a criminal offence.”
His allegations will reportedly be heard in a Jodhpur court on March 21.
Ashok Arora, former secretary of India’s Supreme Court, says that the case is extremely unlikely to make any headway.
_“This will fall flat in the court. You cannot force somebody to follow a ritual,” he said.
