Grigoryeva, 33, was Russia's top threat in the 10,000 meters at the Sydney and Athens Olympics before taking up road work full time after her first-place finish in the Paris Marathon on April 10, 2005.

When the race devolved from a marathon to a sprint, Grigoryeva effortlessly dusted off last year's runnerup, Latvia's Jelena Prokopcuka (2:29:58) and darkhorse Madai Perez (2:30:16) of Mexico.

“At 35 kilometers I understood I had the power to win the race,” said Grigoryeva through an interpreter.

“After 35 kilometers, that was the critical point for me. Between 35 and 40 kilometers I knew I could hold the pace and push the pace and win the race. I am very confident about my speed and carrying my speed to the finish line. Running 10,000 meters gave me some inside confidence going into the last two miles.”

Latvia's Jelena Prokopcuka came in second two years in a row.
