Lawyers for Phil Spector have set out the music producer’s defence by insisting an actress found dead at his mansion killed herself.
The jury at his trial heard Lana Clarkson took alcohol and painkillers before shooting herself in 2003.
The court heard from a lawyer specialising in forensics who talked through bullet trajectories, blood spatter and what she called “the absence of evidence to prove guilt which is proof of innocence”.
ITV web site quoted lawyer Linda Kenney-Baden as saying: “The science will tell you that Phillip Spector did not shoot Lana Clarkson, that he did not hold the gun and that he did not pull the trigger.”
However, the prosecution claims Spector threatened other girlfriends with guns in scenarios similar to the Clarkson case.
The first witness, Dorothy Melvin, said that while dating Spector in the 1990s, the producer had threatened her with a gun after drinking heavily while they were both at his home.
But Spector’s defence team claims the testimony is a “story made up by people who were not there.”
If convicted of second-degree murder, Spector could face 15 years to life in prison.
