The ex-wife of the first openly gay governor McGreevey said she never knew her husband was gay and was shocked when he confessed his sexuality to her.
"It just hit me like a ton a bricks. I wasn't absorbing it," said Dina Matos McGreevey, who is divorcing former New Jersey Gov. James E. McGreevey. "I just started to cry."
In divorce papers, the former governor wrote that his wife "knew of my sexual orientation before our marriage" and "chose to either ignore it or block it out of her mind, even when questioned by her friends." He told the world in August 2004 he was "a gay American’" and had an affair with a male aide. He resigned months later.
In a memoir published last September, McGreevey wrote that he married to help his political career, Chicago Sun-Times reports.
"No one ever said to me that he was gay," Dina Matos McGreevey said. "It's a cliche that the wife is always the last to know, and it's true."_
