Hollywood star Angelina Jolie blamed the weight loss which has raised eyebrows among gossip columnists on the death of her mother in an interview published overnight.
"Someone saying to me that I'm thin is not a compliment," she told London's Evening Standard newspaper.
"I've always been lean and this year I lost my mom and I've gone through a lot. I have four kids and I finished breastfeeding ??“ it's been hard to get my nutrition back on track.
Instead of people saying I look like a person dealing with something emotionally, they assume it's because I want to fit into skinny jeans."
The star's mother, actress Marcheline Bertrand, died of cancer in January, Ninemsn reports.
Jolie, who with Brad Pitt makes up one of the world's most famous showbiz couples, stars as the wife of murdered United States reporter Daniel Pearl in A Mighty Heart, which is being released in the US on June 22.
Pearl, who worked for the Wall Street Journal, was beheaded in Pakistan by Islamic extremists in 2002 while researching outlawed groups.
