2004 winner Maria Sharapova and defending champion Amelie Mauresmo advanced to the fourth round of the Wimbledon tennis championships before rain ended play at the All England Club.
Sharapova completed a 6-3, 6-3 win over Ai Sugiyama of Japan and fourth-seeded Mauresmo routed Mara Santangelo 6-1, 6-2. Rain allowed less than 90 minutes of play Saturday, Detroite Free Press reports.
"It's been pretty solid," Sharapova said. "I've been doing the right things when I need to do them."
Maria Sharapova was getting a lot of attention at Wimbledon for the fluttering white tennis dress she describes as "Swan Lake-inspired."
Sharapova was pleased by compliments, Boston Gliobe informs.
"Thank you. I'm glad you got the [avian] point. It is a swan-inspired dress," she said of the small wings of pleated fabric down the back. "Of course, it's white. A swan is usually white, right, unless it’s weird."
