Holyfield: _“I did the best I could with the style he had”_ · 2007-10-15 13:27

Sultan Ibragimov, Evander Holyfield, www.allboxing.ruSultan Ibragimov retained his WBO Heavyweight Title with a unanimous decision over Evander Holyfield. The judges scored the fight 118-110, 117-111 and 117-111.

Evander Holyfield, 44, was unable to match Ibragimov’s counter-punching, BBC Sport informs.

Holyfield, who last held a version of the heavyweight title in 2000, was wobbled by Ibragimov, 32, in the seventh round and again in the 10th.

The veteran’s record is now 42-9-2, while Ibragimov improves to 22-0-1.

“It was a great fight. He got the decision and I have to go back to the drawing board,” said Holyfield, who was aggressive early but spent most of the fight taking Ibragimov’s punches without delivering much in return, USA Today reports. “He’s a left-handed fighter, and moves a lot. I did the best I could with the style he had.”

According to Telegraph.co.uk, Evander Holyfield had been advised to do the best thing for himself – and boxing – and hang up the gloves for good. The once great fighter received the kind of reception reserved for retired greats at charity dinners on Saturday night in Moscow, before a one-sided defeat to Russian Sultan Ibragimov.

Roger Mayweather, Ibragimov’s trainer, and the uncle of unbeaten welterweight champion Floyd Mayweather, said after the contest: “If he couldn’t get past this shot, it’s time to walk away. He’s won the championship four times. What’s left to prove?”
