Blanchett doesn't save Elizabeth: The Golden Age · 2007-10-16 15:19

Cate Blanchett in Elizabeth: The Golden Age, www.filmmakermagazine.comAmerican audiences have turned their noses up at Cate Blanchett's new Oscar hope, Elizabeth: The Golden Age.

The film, struck by negative reviews by America's top critics, made a poor debut in US and Canadian theatres on the weekend, making just $US6.2 million ($6.9 million).

The disappointing debut came despite Elizabeth: The Golden Age opening on 2,000 screens across the US and Canada, Sydney Morning Herald reports.

Elizabeth: The Golden Age will now struggle to remain in theatres in the run up to the February 24 Academy Awards, where Blanchett and her Australian supporting cast, Geoffrey Rush and Abbie Cornish, were once thought as Oscar favourites.

The film is a sequel to Blanchett's 1998 Elizabeth, where she plays British monarch Queen Elizabeth I.

US critics called the new film an "inferior follow-up".

Most praised Blanchett's performance, but ridiculed the film.
