Russian security force ready for England-Russia match · 2007-10-17 13:12

Russian OMON, www.nbp-info.ruThe Moscow division of Russia’s elite security force, the OMON, has carried out training exercises ahead of the visit by 5,000 English soccer fans to Moscow on October 17.

Russia are due to play England on Wednesday in a Euro 2008 qualifying match – a game that Russia have to win to have a chance of qualifying for the final stages of the tournament, due to be held in Austria and Switzerland next summer.

The OMON was formed in 1979 as a counter-terrorist group ahead of the 1980 Moscow Olympic Games. OMON members receive intensive weapons and hand-to-hand combat training, and have been compared to S.W.A.T. teams in the U.S.

An OMON spokesman said that officers had received training on how to conduct themselves with “foreign citizens,” as well as instructions on how to prevent mass brawls between English and Russian supporters, RIA Novosti informs.

While English soccer hooliganism has seen a marked decrease since its “heyday” in the 1980s, hooliganism in Russia, virtually unheard of in the U.S.S.R, is on the increase. Indeed, many Russian hooligan groups have expressed a desire to test themselves against English fans. Moreover, 5 English fans have already been beaten by Russians.

In total, some 5,000 OMON officers and police officers are set to be on duty for Wednesday’s match at the 80,000 capacity Luzhniki stadium. Kick off is at 7 p.m. Moscow time.
