Brad Pitt to build homes for Hurricane Katrina victims · 2007-12-04 12:14

Brad Pitt, edition.cnn.comActor Brad Pitt said on Monday he wants to build 150 environmentally friendly homes for families displaced by Hurricane Katrina in a hard-hit New Orleans neighborhood.

Pitt's Make It Right project aims to revive the Lower Ninth Ward which was almost totally destroyed in the 2005 storm, Reuters informs.

The actor, who pledged $5 million toward the reconstruction, said the first of the homes should be ready by next summer.

"We are going to start with 150 homes. I mean, this area where we are standing right now, they have lost over 5,000," Pitt said, adding that he is in the process of trying to help raise more money for the project.

"I'm asking for foundations, for high net-worth individuals, for church groups, for corporations to come in and adopt a house. Basically, $150,000 will get a family back into their home," he said, Earthtimes reports.

According to Guardian Unlimited, Pitt, who had ambitions to be an architect if he had not taken up acting, commissioned 13 architectural firms to produce houses that would incorporate solar power and other environmentally-sound designs.
