Russia to present in world’s oceans · 2007-12-06 12:47

Russia's Navy, www.tvzvezda.ruRussia is planning naval exercises in the Mediterranean Sea and the Atlantic Ocean. Its fleet has resumed its continual presence in different regions of the world’s oceans.

“There are plans to dispatch ships to the northeast Atlantic and the Mediterranean Sea from now to February 3, 2008. The expedition is aimed at ensuring a naval presence and establishing conditions for secure Russian navigation,” Defense Minister Anatoly Serdyukov told the president at a meeting in the Kremlin on Wednesday.

The minister said an aircraft-carrying heavy cruiser, two anti-submarine ships and a tanker left for the Mediterranean on Wednesday, where they will be joined by a Black Sea Fleet missile cruiser and a tanker, RIA Novosti reports.

Three exercises, involving the vessels and aircraft, are being planned.

This is the latest sign of a resurgence in Russia’s military capabilities, the BBC’s Nick Childs says.

Russia recently resumed long-range patrols by its bomber aircraft.

The practise was suspended after the collapse of the Soviet Union and was revived in August this year, as part of a more assertive foreign policy pursued by President Vladimir Putin.
