Russian hockey team, www.sport-express.ru/Russian hockey team claimed the World Championship title for the first tie in 15 years with a 5-4 overtime victory over Canada.

Vyacheslav Bykov’s champs dethroned the IIHF World Cup home side Canada with a 5-4 overtime victory in the final.

Ilya Kovalchuk scored the winner for the Russian team as the score was tied 4-4 after the third period.

This trophy became the first World Cup title for Russia since 1993 while Canada failed to become the first host nation to seal the title since 1986.

Russia were 2-4 behind late in the third period, however two kick goals from Alexei Tereschenko and Ilya Kovalchuk brought the teams level.

Almost in three minutes in overtime Atlanta forward Kovalchuk fired in the winner to end Russia’s 15-year gold medal drought, Sport Express reports.
