Prince William, www.entertainers.co.uk Prince William of Wales was made a Knight of the Garter and becomes a Royal Knight Companion – and the 1,000th knight in the register. The ceremony took place at St George’s Chapel, Windsor.

William’s father, the Prince of Wales, received the Order of the Garter in 1958, the Princess Royal in 1994. The Duke of Edinburgh was created a Royal Knight in 1947 – the year he married Princess Elizabeth.

The Order of the Garter is in the Queen’s personal gifts, without advice from government ministers. In addition to the Royal Knights there are 24 Knights Companion – the maximum permitted, Telegraph.co.uk reports.
