Russia and Ukraine may sign gas deal soon · 2009-01-19 15:21
Ukrainian Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko is expected to fly to Moscow to sign a deal on gas prices, ending the 19-day dispute.
Experts from the two state energy companies have been finalising the text of the document after an agreement was reached on Saturday night.
The EU gave a guarded response to the deal, saying the crisis would only be over once gas supplies resumed.
Millions of Europeans have been without heat due to the dispute, BBC reports.
Meanwhile the European Commission is to hold an extraordinary session of the EU Gas Coordination Group in Brussels on Monday to discuss energy supplies in the wake of the Russian-Ukraine gas dispute.
According to RIA Novosti, the meeting will not be attended by Russian or Ukrainian representatives, said EC spokesman Ferran Tarradellas Espuny, as the session is designed to evaluate "the situation of gas deliveries to EU member states."
The EC welcomed an agreement reached in Moscow on Sunday between Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin and his Ukrainian counterpart Yulia Tymoshenko that should make it possible to restart gas supplies to Europe. However, the organization also said that a "test" of Russia's reliability of a gas supplier and of Ukraine's as a transit-country would be their willingness to promptly resume supplies to Europe.
EU states import a quarter of their gas from Russia and 80% of supplies come via Ukraine. Almost 20 countries in Europe have been affected by the dispute.
Russia switched off gas supplies to Ukraine on 1 January in a row over payment. Transit supplies dried up within a week as Russia accused Kiev of stealing gas meant for other countries.
