Children in a desperately poor neighborhood of India cheered and broke out into dance yesterday after learning that "Slumdog Millionaire," a movie starring two boys from their neighborhood, won the Academy Award for Best Picture of 2008.
Another big winner at the Sunday night awards, which are given every year, was the movie "Wall E." It won for Best Animated Feature Film, beating "Bolt" and "Kung Fu Panda," Washingtion Post reports.
"Slumdog Millionaire" is about a poor teenager from Mumbai, India. He becomes a contestant on the Indian version of "Who Wants to Be a Millionaire" and is accused of cheating.
Two of the child actors in "Slumdog Millionaire" live in Bandra, one of Mumbai's slums.
The actors, 10-year-old Azharuddin Mohammed Ismail and 9-year-old Rubina Ali, were flown to Los Angeles for the ceremony.
Their friends at home watched on television.
