The shanty of child actor Azharuddin Ismail, who played young Jamal in the Oscar-winning Slumdog Millionaire, was among the 25 huts razed in Bandra on Thursday as a part of the Indian authorities' monsoon preparedness plan, Indian Express reports.
"??Ĥofficials accompanied by policemen came and announced they were demolishing our huts. There was no prior warning. Azhar was sleeping when they came. The noise and the ruckus scared him," said Azhar's mother Shamim Ismail.
"We will put up in a makeshift accommodation till we can afford another accommodation. The MHADA (Maharashtra Housing and Area Development Authority) had promised us flats, but we are clueless when we will actually get them. Till then, we will have to live in such squalor," she said.
According to Entertaiment Weekly, Slumdog Millionaire director Danny Boyle and producer Christian Coulson have promised to donate $30,000 to ultimately help the young stars find permanent housing.
