AVTOVAZ workers protest in Russia · 2009-08-06 18:56
Workers of Russia's largest car maker, AVTOVAZ, have taken to the streets today to demand an end to cuts in pay and avoiding bankruptcy.
AVTOVAZ, which makes Ladas, has closed its plant at Togliatti, central Russia, several times during this year.
No cars will be built in August and the plant will work little time from September to February.
The decision will affect 110 thousand workers, the majority of whom will get just 133 dollar salary. Meanwhile the minimal "cost of living" in the region is $200.
Moreover, the decision will be destructive for the whole city ??“ AVTOVAZ is a making-town plant. That's why after its stoppages the taxes to the city budget will be limited, people will refuse from many goods and the trade with people working there will also suffer.
The protest participants addressed to Russian government and the president.
