Rachel Ray and Tyra Banks among winners at Daytime Emmy Awards · 2009-08-31 14:19
The 36th Annual Daytime Emmy Awards was an event of firsts, lasts and one very Big Bird. According to The Associated Press, the winners were presented at the Orpheum Theatre in Los Angeles Sunday night.
The Bold and the Beautiful won outstanding drama series, ending the CBS soap’s 22-year-streak without an Emmy win.
The award show also marked an end for Guiding Light, which was cancelled after a 72-year run. But, although the show is going dark, it didn’t leave empty handed. The former CBS show took home one of its last trophies, with Jeff Branson tying for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama Series with _All My Children_’s Vincent Irizarry.
Host Vanessa Williams kicked off the night with a song-and-dance number to a parody-filled “Can’t Take My Eyes Off of You,” and strutted along the stage in a slinky white gown, E! Online reports.
But not even the Ugly Betty star could upstage the loveable characters of PBS’ Sesame Street, who joined former cast member Sandra Oh onstage after they received the Lifetime Achievement Award for educating and entertaining children for 40 years. The _Street_’s biggest stars, like Big Bird, Elmo and Cookie Monster, hit the stage for a rendition of their famed theme song.
Rachel Ray and Tyra Banks also won big, taking home Emmys for Outstanding Entertainment and Informative Talk Shows, respectively.
“I love daytime television,” catwalk maven Tyra Banks said when accepting her show’s win in the informative talk show category, Los Angeles Times informs. “I learned the birds and the bees from watching [‘General Hospital’ characters] Luke and Laura. I learned my ABCs, 1-2-3 from ‘Sesame Street.’ This [Emmy] is for the women out there that do not feel beautiful . . . that do not have time to do their makeup. . . . This is for you guys.”
The ladies of The View were among the talk show divas garnering Emmy accolades. The chatty co-hosts weren’t in attendance at the ceremony, but won Best Talk Show Host, shutting down Ellen Degeneres’ four-year winning streak.
