Maria Sharapova continued her comeback from shoulder surgery with an impressive opening win in the US Open first round.
She beat Bulgaria's Tsvetana Pironkova 6-3 6-0 in 73 minutes to reach the second round Tuesday.
"I played a very tricky opponent that didn't give me much room and I'm also coming from a pretty slow court in Toronto, so it was just about adjusting," the 2006 US Open champion said.
But top seed Dinara Safina had to dig deep to avoid the humiliation of a first-round exit. She beat Australian Olivia Rogowska 6-7 6-2 6-4 in two hours and 35 minutes making 48 unforced errors.
Sixth seed and 2004 winner Kuznetsova won easily too beating Germany's Julia Goerges 6-3 6-2. Another Russian, 2004 finalist Elena Dementieva, convincingly beat French player Camille Pin 6-1 6-2 in 59 minutes, SkyNews reports.
