Look at Caster Semenya in You! · 2009-09-09 20:31
Plagued by gender controversy, South African goes from muscled jock to glam gal for magazine shoot.
The world saw Caster Semenya in her green and yellow tracksuit, a gold medal dangling from her neck, and controversy about her sex dogging every speedy step. Now the South African runner sports a stylish hairdo, a short cocktail dress and gladiator-strap stilettos, all part of her cover-girl debut.
It’s perhaps the ultimate makeover, from muscled jock to glamour gal. The South African lifestyle magazine You features a gracefully posed, jewellery-bedecked Semenya on the cover of its current issue, with five pages inside of fashion photos and a story titled, “Wow, Look at Me Now!”
You, which bills itself as South Africa’s most popular English magazine, quotes her saying: “I’d like to dress up more often and wear dresses but I never get the chance . ... I’ve never bought my own clothes. My mum buys them for me, but now that I know I can look like this, I’d like to dress like this more often.”
Last month, Semenya, 18, easily won the 800-metre race at the World Championships in Berlin. Her speed, deep voice and muscular build prompted questions; the International Association of Athletics Federations had already ordered gender-verification tests on the runner, Toronto star reports.
