Edgar A. Poe gets funeral 160 years after death · 2009-10-12 18:51
Edgar Allаn Poe was laid to rest at Westminster Hall inside a simple redwood coffin, after a grand theatrical and oratorical send-off to usher him, as he once wrote, “into the region of shadows.”_
Of course the true Poe remained buried beneath the monument on the northwest corner of the church grounds in Southwest Baltimore, near where his body was placed hastily in a family plot soon after his death on Oct. 7, 1849.
But 2 days ago the spirit of Edgar Allan Poe’s death was revived, so that the great poet could receive the eulogy that eluded him in the days following his demise, Baltimore Sun reports.
Billed as a proper reburial of Poe, the funeral was part of a series of events commemorating the bicentennial of Poe’s birth, in 1809.
According to ABC News, Poe’s death was as mysterious as some of his works. He was found outside a bar, delirious, unable to tell anyone what was wrong with him. He was 40 years old and was dead within a few days. A cousin didn’t announce the death and had Poe buried with only about 10 people in attendance.
