Boris Berezovsky divorces Galina · 2009-10-27 15:50
The extraordinary life Russian oligarch Boris Berezovsky, once one of the most powerful men in the world, is about to come under the spotlight of a British court in the next few weeks when his wife Galina finally divorces him.
Galina, 50, who fell in love with Berezovsky when she was 22 and he was an impecunious Moscow mathematician earning £60 a month, is employing lawyer Sandra Davis, a partner with Mishcon de Reya, in what will be a fiercely contested High Court battle, Daily Mail reports.
Ms Davis, head of the firm’s family department, is an expert in high-profile divorces; her previous clients include Princess Diana, Jerry Hall and Thierry Henry.
It is the first high-profile Russian divorce to take place in Britain – another famous Russian tycoon Roman Abramovich divorced his wife Irina in Moscow – and at stake is between £30million and £100million of Berezovsky’s fortune, which was once estimated at £1billion.
Galina Berezovsky was the tycoon’s wife of 18 years.
The only problem is that Mrs Berezovsky has been separated from her husband for most of the marriage, perhaps as long as 16 years. Such a long time apart will make it difficult for her lawyers to argue that she made a valuable contribution to building up her husband’s business empire, The Independent adds.
Galina, who has two children by Berezovsky, aged 20 and 17, now lives in a penthouse overlooking Hyde Park.
Boris Berezovsky has been cohabiting with Yelena Gorbunova, 42, by whom he has two children, for many years. Mr Berezovsky’s spokesman, Lord Bell, said: “It is true that Galina has asked for a divorce. But he hasn’t lived with Galina for 16 or 18 years. If he is divorced, then he intends to marry Yelena.”
