"Slumdog Millionaire" named best foreign film in Russia · 2010-01-30 20:33

Golden Eagle Award was held yesterday night in Moscow. "Slumdog Millionaire", directed by Danny Boyle and Loveleen Tandan, was named the best foreign film in Russian film distribution.

"Hipsters" (Stilyagi) by director Valery Todorovsky was named the best motion film. The picture was also given several more awards: Yuri Korotkov ??“ the best screenplay, Sergey Chuprov ??“ the best soundman work, Sergey Garmash ??“ the best supporting role.

"Hipsters" is a tender love story wrapped in an infectiously fun musical. The story takes place in Moscow in 1955. The film is also about opposition between grim-faced Soviet people, whose everyday life is coloured grey, and hipsters, who is brave enough to show their true colours.

The best male role awarded to Bogdan Stupka, who starred in "Taras Bulba". Taras Bulba's Vladimir Svetozarov was awarded the best artistic director prize and its' Ekaterina Shapkaits was given the best dress designer prize.

"Taras Bulba" is a romanticized historical religious novel by Nikolai Gogol. It tells the story of an old Zaporozhian Cossack, Taras Bulba, and his two sons, Andrey and Ostap. Taras' sons studied at the Kiev Academy and return home. The three men set out on an epic journey to Zaporizhian Sich located in Ukraine, where they join other Cossacks and go to war against Poland. It's also a love story.

The Golden Eagle Award is a Russian national award for motion pictures and TV series made in Russia, run by the Russian Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. It honors both film and television achievements, given out in 20 nominations each January. The ceremony is held at the Mosfilm studios.
