Princess Diana' black dress is put up for auction · 2011-06-08 16:35
A sexy strapless black dress, famously worn by Princess Diana at her royal coming-out, goes under the hammer in London today and could fetch up to $72,000, organizers said.
The gown, by designer Elizabeth Emanuel, caused a stir back in March 1981, when the then-19-year-old Diana Spencer wore it the evening after she was engaged to Prince Charles, New York Post reports.
It's estimated that the number should go for at least $43,000, but perhaps as much as $72,000. The dress had been missing for years until the designer's hubby, David Emanuel, found it at their home.
Auctioneer Kerry Taylor told Mirror.co.uk: "It was a controversial dress because it was so low. The public hadn't seen a potential royal who was young and sexy for a long time. Diana said she didn't realise the press would make such a fuss, but boy did they ??“ and they continued to do so."
